Firefox browser – updated version.
I recommend that everyone use Mozilla Firefox to browse the internet, rather than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Firefox does not enable “scripting,” which is a means by which the bad guys can download spyware and viruses on to your PC – often just by you visiting their website (commonly called a drive-by download).

Firefox has been updated to version 2. Simply go to www.getfirefox.com to download the latest version.

Stream Music over your Wireless Network
I recently purchased a device that enables me to wirelessly stream my music from my PC's iTunes Music Library in my office to my music center in my living room.

This device, the Sirocco, made by a Canadian company called Sondigo, has worked flawlessly for 3 months since I set it up.

The sound quality is excellent, and all I use are RCA jacks to connect it directly to my Stereo amplifier. If you have a Stereo receivers/amplifier with a digital optical input, you can connect this to the Sirocco for even better sound.

The setup was very easy and, unlike many similar products, worked first time out of the box.

Another great thing about the Sirocco is that it will work with copy protected music – in other words, music downloaded from the iTunes Music Store, or from the other download services such as Napster and Rhapsody. Many similar devices will not work with copy protected music.

The cost of the device is $139 plus shipping. Here's a link http://www.sondigo.com/sirocco/overview

Better internet phone service
This cool service allows you to use your phone where ever you are - as long as you have an internet connection and a PC

There is no download, installation, or headset to worry about.

Go to http://www.jajah.com  and register your phone number.

Then, type in the phone number you want to call. Your landline or cell phone rings. When you answer it you'll hear it ringing the other party.

Start your conversation. If your friend is already registered with JaJa, there is no charge for either of you. Otherwise there is a charge of 2.5 cents per minute in the U.S. and Canada. If you want to make International calls, they cost a little more.

If you prefer, trial the service before you register -the first five minutes are free.

Once you register, you can use JaJah without paying because you get a $3 credit. Only once you have used up your credit do they start charging you.

The restriction is that you need a PC and a browser wherever you are so that you can type in the number you want to call.

Remote Access Software
It's 8.00 in the evening. You cannot open your PowerPoint file and you have a presentation to give next morning. You are in a hotel room thousands of miles from home with just an internet connection. What do you do?

Anyone who needs technical support in a hurry and has a broadband connection call install free software from a company called LogMeIn. Several of my clients are already using the program, which enables me to connect remotely to their PC and walk them through a problem - as long as they still have an internet connection. I take control of their PC temporarily. My clients are at the end of the phone while I am doing this.

The advantages to this are several:

  • I have supported clients thousands of miles away
  • Some problems only take a few minutes to solve, and my support fees are lower. The cost is $15 per 15 minute increments and can be paid using a credit card via my website
  • I can, for example, configure Outlook for a new email account, or upgrade an anti-virus program, or show them how to play a video clip at a web site. These issues only take a few minutes to solve and are typical of problems that can usually be fixed remotely
  • Yet another benefit is the ability for YOU to connect remotely to YOUR PC from another location. Perhaps you need to reference a file or an email address? As long as you keep your remote PC switched on and online, you can access your files from anywhere using a secure password.

Go to www.logmein.com

You have to register first (click on Create an Account - which is hidden at the top of the page). Choose logmein FREE.

Alternatively, there is a Pro version, which costs $70 per year and is worth it if you need the ability to transfer files between locations.
