More on the Sony rootkit
This excellent article presents some food for thought about corporate interests colluding to the detriment of the computer-using general public.

Sony installs software on your PC
If you play one of 20 Sony music CDs on your PC, the CD will install copy-protection software which will hide in the background and prevent you from copying your music more than twice.

These CD's, which are marked with "Content Protected" labels on the packaging, surreptitiously install a proprietary watchdog program.

The software installs something called a rootkit - this is a program that has been used by virus writers to conceal their tracks. It acts in such a way that no standard antivirus program detects it.

If you try to remove the software manually, you may end up disabling your PCs CD player completely. You have to use the Uninstall link on Sony BMG's customer-service Web site, which only appeared after the discovery of this software by a programmer. See the following links:

Cool website
I went to the U2 concert at Madison Square Gardens. It was a great show.

Typically, I am not one of those people who buys tickets within 10 minutes of them going on sale and, invariably, I find out about stuff like this weeks later after they are totally sold out. However, on this occasion, I managed to buy 2 tickets, great seats, 2hrs before the show from a site called www.stubhub.com

This is a legitimate market place for sellers to dispose of tickets to concerts, sports events etc. You probably pay over the odds, but at least you buy them safe in the knowledge that what you are buying is not counterfeit and you get exactly what you paid for.

This is definitely a website to add to your "Favorites".

Outlook tools and Firefox update
Here are some useful tools which should make your life easier:

Outlook Search Tool

Recommended by one of my clients, Lookout is a free program offered by Microsoft that will automatically index your Outlook files and enable you to find emails, your calendar items and your contacts - really fast. It works not just with Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003, but with any Office file and even your pictures and music. Just go to the Lookout searchbar and, under 'Options', select 'Add Files'. While the initial indexing takes time, after that Lookout's search ability is lightning fast.

Outlook Backup Tool

This free Microsoft add-in enables you to save your Outlook data file to a location of your choosing, for example, your My Documents folder (rather than the obscure location where they are stored by default). Outlook saves all your emails, your calendar and address book in a single file, called a "pst" file. If you have archived old emails, they are stored in a separate "pst" file.

This utility will find then all. It will also remind you to save a copy to your chosen destination folder every 7 days by default and, as long as you then make a backup to CD, DVD, USB flash drive etc, you will have a copy you can restore in the event of a system failure. Backing up Outlook files to your My Documents folder is a great incentive to encourage you to backup all your valuable data, as having everything of value in a single location makes backing up easier

And on the subject of security:

Firefox update

If you are using Firefox as your web browser, you may be using an old version. The latest version (1.0.7) fixes a number of security flaws, and can be found here.

Welcome to Podcasting
Until very recently, I have been using my iPod to listen to my music on the subway between appointments, or when it's cool enough to run round Prospect Park without the risk of heatstroke.

I've known about podcasting for some time- an audio recording posted online that, with the right software, is automatically downloaded to your music device as soon as it is released. It's free and you can choose from the likes of the BBC, NBC & PBS through to amateur recordings made in someone's basement. And these downloads cover just about every subject you can think of.

It didn't really grab me until I found out that the tech journalists from the TV show I used to love to watch until it's recent demise -The Screensavers - had got together and started doing weekly broadcasts discussing the latest tech news in their own inimitable way. http://thisweekintech.com/

At the same time, fortuitously for me, Apple launched iTunes version 4.9, which introduced the ability to subcribe to and download podcasts.

I am already a huge fan of technology that allows me to record and then view my favorite TV programs when I want to watch them without the commercials. That is why I bought a Replay (think TiVo, but better). Now I can do the same thing with radio shows.

Who'd have thought I would be using my iPod to listen to tech heads arguing about whether Apple have made a serious mistake to switch to the Intel platform on the 2/3 train into Manhattan?
