I switched to Vonage, the internet-based phone service....
....about a month ago, and I'm very happy so far. I'm saving about $50 per month. And no one call tell the difference.

After calling them up and applying over the phone, they sent me a special VOIP router. Once it was plugged into the network, which requrired a small amount of configuration as I was connecting the Vonage Linksys router to my home network D-Link router, the phone line came up and I was good to go.

It took 6 weeks for our old phone number to come with me, so we could only make calls out from the phone until now. Any calls to our old number went to our old, now empty, apartment. Not really a problem as most people we know have our cell phone numbers. It was only the telemarketers who were ultimately cut off after the line went unanswered. With any luck, we will be off their lists for good.

There are some great articles about the pros and cons of switching to an internet phone service. Here are two:

My MSN home page.....
...is customized with my favorite links. You can create your own personized home page using a particular type of technology, called XML.This web language enables customizable links.

On my home page, I had the latest news from sites such as the New York Times, MSNBC and Newsweek, as well as specialist tech news, the latest quotes for my stock portfolio, local movie times, eBay items I'm bidding on, etc etc.

A few days ago, my home page suddenly changed, and I was left with a completely different set of links- what amounted to the default home page MSN thinks you might like when you sign on to the my.msn website for the first time.

My guess is that a programmer at Microsoft had done some updating and had accidently deleted files on their server, and that was that.

No message, no apology, and an email that i subsequently sent to MSN tech support elicited the response:

Thank you for contacting MSN.com Technical Support and informing us that your MY.MSN personalized page settings are not showing. We understand how important your personalized page settings are and apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you.

At this time, the only way to restore your settings is for you to personalize your MY.MSN page again manually. If you need assistance in doing this, please click the Help link on the top right hand side of your MY.MSN page after you log in or contact support again so we can assist you.

Thanks again for your patience and for using MSN!

So, if you have been using MY.MSN.com as your home page, and all your personalized links have been changed, don't expect them to come back. Just set aside an hour or two and start again.

Good article on how to spot a "phishing" email
The "phishing" epidemic, where a fraudulent (spoof) email pretends to be from a well-known company, is very prevalent at the moment.

Here is a link to paypal, who give some very good advice on what to look for.

www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/general/SecuritySpoof-outside

The advice, although specific to paypal, is applicable to any banking, credit card, ISP site.

Paypal provide some visual examples, which make it easier to see how spoofing can fool you into giving out your personal details. This is definitely worth looking at if you are unsure about how phishing works and how you can be fooled into disclosing confidential information for the purposes of identity theft.
