Incredibe Dell discount offer
I found out about an amazing one-day Dell deal and emailed my clients.

It appears that Dell is offering a $750 discount using this coupon code which you copy and paste into your shopping cart at checkout on their website www.dell.com

 ZD5$P0NS954P16

I tested it out on a configured 600m notebook worth $2100 and it worked, although I’m not sure if it will last till the end of today or beyond. You have to have a laptop to the value of at least $1500 in your shopping cart before the discount code will work.

If I hadn't just got my Thinkpad, I would have jumped in with two feet as this is the best deal I've seen in a long time. I particularly like their current crop of 600m and 700m notebooks.

G4TechTV
What used to be my favorite tech program on Time Warner Digital Cable was recently reinstated on Channel 105 after both sides came to a contractual agreement.

It would not be an understatement to say I loved it's flagship show -a program called The Screensavers.

The program provided a lot of useful info on what was happening in the world of technology, such as new and useful (and often free) software programs, the latest virus and security threats, reviews of tech gadgets, etc etc.

However, after the station was sold, the main hosts and many of the staff 'moved on'. What was a rounded, relevant and serious show (with a brilliant website - which is no more) now appears to be focusing on a different audience and, amongst other things, features tech items such as 'umbrella girls'......For more info on what a umbrella girl is, go to  http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcphotos/wsbbabes.html

I am still watching the show for the time being in the hope it gets better.

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Microsoft have released a huge patch for XP, which you will be invited to download along with your Windows critical updates.

My advice is DON'T install Service Pack 2 yet.

I have heard it creates problems with a number of third party programs.

Wait until Microsoft releases an update to SP2 before you install it. Or at least, if you do decide to install it, pray that the System Restore function built into XP works, so you can undo the installation if you need to.

Here is a a link to the Microsoft page which lists the programs that do not function correctly after installing SP2. It is being updated on an on-going basis and is almost certainly not an all-encompassing list.

Going to the UK for 4 weeks
Coming on the trip with me will be my new Treo 600 phone.

I hope to use it with my T-Mobile UK account while I'm over there.  Luckily, I have an 'unlocked' phone so that ought to be no problem........famous last words. My new Thinkpad arrives tomorrow, so I'll be taking that along as well.

My mum (that's mom in UK English)is not well and has had to go into hospital for several operations with another visit scheduled for the end of this month, so I wanted to be with her.

I'm also selling my flat in Chiswick, in West London, so I want to keep an eye on how things are going with that. I'll also catch up with my friends, with whom I don't spend nearly enough time staying in touch.

Luckily I have accumulated enough airmiles to earn a ticket and saved myself about $500. I still had to pay $74 taxes and a $50 late fee, so Delta still managed to squeeze some cash out of me. At least I can fly Virgin non-stop (one of their partners), rather than have to go through Delta's hub in Cincinnatti and hang around for hours at the airport.

I sent out an advanced warning email to all my clients letting them know I will be away and as a result, received a flood of business, so this week had been a bit crazy. I'm not complaining- I'm very grateful for the business and pleased that my emails get read.

New Laptop
After using my wife's 6 year old Sony Vaio for some time, a laptop which looked really cool in it's day (1998) but is now very definitely on it's last legs, I finally cracked.

Business has been good so I'm buying an IBM Thinkpad.

It has been a difficult decision. I've been mulling over which laptop to buy for some time. On the shortlist was:

A Dell Inspiron 600m: http://www1.us.dell.com/(...)c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

another Sony, the V505 series: http://www.sonystyle.com/(...)VAIONotebookComputers

or a somewhat enigmatic, relatively unknown (but super-fast) PC maker called Velocity Micro: http://www.velocitymicro.com/(...)7479d64954d595f24ec7c01395a9c894

Many of my clients have the Dell. I am a big fan of Dell, and their support can still be excellent (case in point - 2 weeks ago they delivered a replacement laptop hard drive to my home, on behalf of a client, in less than 24 hours). This has been one of my favorites.

The Sony V505 is very cool-looking, and has the ideal form-factor for me - small, light and very full-featured. However, it is very expensive, has questionable build quality and poor support.

Velocity Micro builds these really fast machines, but they are not a household name, and there could be a warranty problem if I were to leave the US.

Then an opportunity came up for me to buy a ThinkPad at a very good price. It was also on my wish list, but I was put off by the price of the better equipped models and, in all honesty, they look a bit old-fashioned. But I did have a T40 for 5 months at my old internet firm and I was very happy with it. They may be a bit ordinary to look at, but they are always getting rave reviews. They have great keyboards, they have just brought out a DVD burner option, and the T42, which I am getting, is fast.

The one I've chosen is the smaller version of the T42, with a 14.1 inch screen and the latest Intel 735 processor. It weighs a relatively light 4.7lbs. Lugging around my kit bag on the subway every day for the last 9 months, I know that every ounce of weight I can save counts.

I should have it within the month. It's a special order so it will take a bit longer than normal.

I can't wait.
