Time Warner Cable replies
I did get a response.....

...and it was quick, and handled very well. My letter was passed to a customer service person in the head office.

Unlike many of the people I have spoken to at TWC in the past, this guy was very professional and responsive. The job of this guy is obviously to deal with disgruntled customers determined to make their feelings known to the powers that be.

He was extremely courteous and always available on the end of a phone. In fact, everyone I spoke with at this TWC office was polite and there were no hoops to jump through, i.e. press 1 on your telephone keypad now for Englishat this time all our agents are busy.....blah, blah, blah! .........you know the score.

The phone number, for those of you who want to talk to someone polite and professional in TWC Customer Service is 718.670.0228

The upshot was that talks between G4TechTV and TWC had "broken down" so it is unlikely I'll see my favorite show on this cable provider.

Oh well, deep breath, satellite here I come.........

I do not like Time Warner Cable of NY
It's all about money, obviously. What the customer wants to see doesn't seem to matter, and communication appears to be low down on their priorities.

Time Warner Cable just removed my favorite channel from their line-up.

TechTV features a show called The Screensavers - a great show for the common man trying to understand computing and a useful source of info on what's going on in the industry. The show's presenters are honest and do not seem at all influenced by advertisers.

TechTV was 'merged' with a channel owned by Comcast, TWC's biggest competitor. Without any warning, TechTV disappeared from the screens overnight. TWC's customer service people said it was due to technical difficulties. Hmmm..... After a lot of calls, one of them finally read out a statement to me over the phone saying their was no agreement with the new owners of the channel and it was no longer being distributed by TWC of NY.

Problem is I get their digital cable predominantly for TechTV. Without it, there is very little else I watch other than BBC news (which I can get on PBS) some HBO shows, and Law and Order. Paying $114 a month for about 4 channels plus my broadband is expensive.

It took me a lot of work and my well-honed phone skills to extract the name of their Director of Customer Service out of them. Have you noticed how hard it is to find the names of anyone who works for TWC other than the first line customer service people? I have mailed a letter but don't expect to get a reply, and have even less than zero expectation of the channel being reinstated.

I am now looking into the offerings of Dish Networks and DirecTV

Studying
I am going for a networking certification called CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)to help my marketability with corporate clients.

Once you can work with Cisco routers and switches, on which nearly all corporate networks and the Internet run, you have the opportunity to work within a much bigger universe. The problem is that it is not an easy exam to pass. I have just taken a week long course of 40 hours and I estimate I will need a further 3 weeks of intensive self-study to get me up to speed.

After passing A+ and Network + relatively easily, I think this is going to be a tough one.

Now that I am telling the world (approx the 25 people who read this blog at a guess), I really am going to have to get my head down. I need to put myself under pressure. What do they say about procrastination? I cant remember but picking up those text books is an inordinate struggle right now.

Keylogging Programs
If you bank online, you should be aware of potential threats from keylogging programs that open ports (back doors)on your PC.

These 'trojans' record your keystrokes and then send your username and bank account password to the criminal hackers who installed them surreptitiously on your PC. They then go online to your bank and try and withdraw money from your account before you realize what's going on.

One of the most important things you can do is go to the Microsoft Windows update site www.windowsupdate.com to keep your PC up-to-date with the latest security patches.
